In a recent report by Oxford International’s Student Global Mobility Index (SGMI), the United States emerged as the top choice for Indian students looking to study abroad. Despite concerns over affordability and safety, the allure of quality education and reputable universities keeps the US at the forefront.
Key Insights from the SGMI Report
Quality of Education:
The SGMI report, published on April 22, highlighted that 45% of students surveyed cited the quality of education as a crucial factor in their decision-making process. Among Indian students, 69% chose the US for higher education, compared to 54% for the UK, 43% for Canada, and 27% for Australia.
Motivating Factors:
The primary reasons for choosing the US included the quality of education (45%) and the reputation of its universities (42%). These factors outweighed concerns about affordability and safety.
Parental Influence:
A significant 71% of Indian students consider their parents or guardians as the main influencers in their decision to study abroad. This trend is consistent across other countries such as Nigeria (72%), Pakistan (71%), and Vietnam (62%).
Affordability and Scholarships:
When considering affordability, 28% of Indian students chose the UK, followed by Australia (20%), Canada (18%), and the US (9%). Scholarships also play a crucial role, with 34% of students opting for Australia, followed by Canada (32%), the UK (27%), and the US (23%).
Expert Commentary:
Mohit Gambir, Managing Director at Oxford International Education Services, remarked that the US remains the most preferred study destination, followed by the UK. He noted that despite affordability and safety concerns, the appeal of high-quality education and esteemed universities drives students to choose the US.
